This is my series of my three still life images. I decided to go with the theme of addiction, and how these products are often glamourised within the media. Each of the objects can bring both happiness but also pain to a person’s life, and also the people around them. The party strings in all of the images signify the view that many people have on these drugs, especially vodka and alcohol, which becomes something that many people depend on to have a good night. Then there is social smoking, which again is glamorised and used as a way of socialising on a night out. Finally the pills is another thing that can be used as a way to improve a party and the ripped up party strings represent a crushed up pill, however all of these objects have their negative aspects to them. The bright colour of the party strings signifies the highs that they give to people, and the black background could be seen as the darkness that they can lead people to in the long-run. I like the continuity of the colour red from image to image, as it stands out from all the party string, and is the main colour of the vodka bottle in the centre. I feel that the simplicity is effective as it makes each object stand out and show the contrast between the positives and negatives that smoking, alcohol and drugs give.
To improve the image of the cigarette’s and vodka, I think an effective addition could be to add a used version of the object. For example, I could add a burnt out cigarette instead of both of the cigarettes being unused and new. I also tried adding party string to the end of a cigarette to represent it being the smoke coming out of the cigarette, however this wasn’t very effective and looked messy, so by having it explode out the box, it keeps the meaning clear and design tidy. Additionally, in the picture of the vodka bottle, I could add a shot glass with the vodka in it, or some vodka spilt on the surface to give the impression that all objects have been used in some way.
